The 90s is a decade to remember fondly, with its fair share of iconic hair moments. Back in the day, some styles worked out better than others. (Thank your lucky stars that Facebook & the ‘gram didn’t exist back then.) Right now, some of the most memorable hair trends of the era are making a comeback.
Here’s the lowdown on how you can pull off the 90s look for the party season. (In a good way, of course.) Read on to discover the throwback styles that really are worth a revisit.
This look was all over the catwalks for AW18. It’s all about embracing the natural texture of your hair. The 90s ‘wild wave’ is effortless and undone. Think of Julia Roberts back in the day. Some of the icons who ruled the catwalks back then, like Cindy Crawford and Kate Moss often used to wear their hair with wild waves. If you already have a natural wave or curl in your hair, this style is a super easy go to.
• Start by washing your hair with our volume, moisture or shine hair products to suit your hair type.
•When hair is towel dried, apply Beyond the Beach Texture Spray, containing Cornish sea salt, to damp hair.
• To enhance your natural texture, blow dry with a diffuser. (Remember those?)
• If your hair is really curly, pull it down while drying to create a looser wave. For straighter hair, use a curling wand to create loose waves.
• Apply more salt spray to create texture and a worn-in look.
There you have it. Your hair is party ready. (Order the Uber, you’re good to go.)
Party ready ponytails
Yes, they’re back. Ponytails are just so versatile and easy to wear. Our co-founder Adam Reed says, “I love that the ponytail trend has begun to make its way back. It’s an iconic trend that always comes back every few years, and the best thing about it is there’s a ponytail to suit everybody.” A 90s ponytail doesn’t have to be perfect, you can have fun with it. If you want your ponytail party ready, try adding hair jewellery, a hairpin or a brooch.
Creating a good base for a ponytail is all about the prep. For a sleek ponytail, prep the hair with Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Treatment Oil+. (Your pony will be ‘oh so smooth’). Then use Abundantly Bouncy Volumising Mousse before blow drying. Apply to towel dried hair from root to tip and comb through with a wide tooth comb.
You can style your ponytail to suit your face shape. If you have a heart-shaped face, a side swept ponytail is a hit. A slightly square-shaped face suits a centre parting, with hair left out of the ponytail to frame your face. Those with oval-shaped faces suit any ponytail. (Lucky things.)
All the accessories
90s nostalgia is big right now, and 90s hair accessories are no exception. Models have been rocking accessories all over the catwalks. This retro vibe is an Insta favourite and is going to be uber popular this upcoming party season. Think snap clips, skinny headbands, comb headbands, beautiful barrettes, ribbons and scarves. If you’re heading out to a party straight from the office, an accessory can help you take your look from day to night. Pop a No-Fuss Fabulousness Dry Shampoo mini in your handbag. After work, you can hop in the bathroom and get party ready. Spray the dry shampoo into the roots of your hair and brush through. Place your accessory firmly in the hair and finish the look with a light mist of hairspray to hold.
One of the best hairsprays for shine is Reassuringly Firm Session Hold Hairspray. Adam says, “Also spray your grips with hairspray before you use them, this will ensure they have more hold and don’t slip.” For an updo with added oomph, try a simple twist or knot and add a gorgeous accessory. A beautiful ribbon or scarf tied around a ponytail can add instant glam. For a chic 90s vibe, try creating a centre parting on straight hair and adding one snap clip to each side of the parting to hold the hair in place. 90s style cool.
Feeling nostalgic? While some of the 90s styles may best be left in the past, there’s no doubt it’s an exciting time to revive some key looks. It’s going to be a stylish and fun party season.
