How to style hair without heat

Want effortlessly beautiful hair without the heat? Summer is the best season to trade in your heat styling tools. If you’re going to maximise your spare time, styling your hair without heat could be the way forward. The key is to use hair styling products to achieve the look you want while letting your hair dry naturally. Promise.

Hair can take longer to dry naturally, but it also takes less effort. You can still look and feel fabulous with a natural air dry that’s as good as a blow dry. Percy & Reed have a whole crop of hair products online that can help you. So ditch the straightening irons. (At least just for a bit.)

There has never been a better time to take a break from the blow dry. And let’s face it, it’s a dream to escape from being cooped up with the hot hair dryer and styling irons. Think of all the lovely things you can do with the saved time. Makeup tutorial, beautiful brunch or box set binge? You choose.

So if you’re short on styling time or keen to relax while your hair practically styles itself, read on. Discover our round-up of no heat hairstyling, with tips from our founders Paul Percival and Adam Reed.

Tame your towel drying and show us a good prime

Begin your journey to air dry perfection by washing your hair as usual. If your hair is feeling dry, use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner. Then towel dry - but take care! Roughly rubbing your hair with a towel can result in frizz and tangles. It can even cause damage and split ends. Blot the excess moisture with the towel from root to tip. Think of pressing the hair rather than rubbing to prevent damage. Gently does it.

The real key to a good air dry is using the right priming product that doesn’t need heat activation. Our Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Balm is, as they say, the cream de la cream of styling products. Use it alone or combine it with any styling product for ease and speed. It will protect you from frizz and humidity for three blissful days. The future is frizz-free.

How to use:

● Dispense 3-5 pumps into palms.

● Apply a small amount of the product from roots to tips.

● Smooth between hands and apply to hair using your fingers or a comb to work from roots to ends.

Adam says:

“When hair is wet apply a primer. Our Wonder Balm is a fantastic leave-in balm that gives light hold and definition to hair even without heat styling.”

Easy, teasy air dry

Mirror, mirror on the wall. Show me the simplest air dry of all. Thankfully, there are a couple of different products you can use to help achieve a simple heatless hairstyle. Try squeezing a golf ball sized amount of Abundantly Bouncy Volumising Mousse into your palm, then distribute through hair using a wide-toothed comb. The simplest air dry of all is just to let your hair dry naturally. Tease and tousle your hair into place with your fingers as it dries.

It’s just a few steps to lavishly luscious hair if you’re using the right product. When dry, smooth a pea-sized amount of Quite Frankly Flawless Finishing Polish through hair to accentuate layers and textures. You can use it to tame flyaways and smooth out any frizzy bits too.

Adam says:

“You won’t go wrong if you treat damp hair to Percy & Reed Abundantly Bouncy Volumising Mousse, then keep teasing and moving the hair into place as it dries for an undone, tousled texture.”

Breezy braids and wonderful waves

You can braid hair while damp to create perfectly undone waves. The result will be a naturally lived-in look with no frizz. After towel drying and applying Wonder Balm, separate the hair into four sections. Spray with styling product and then loosely braid. You can use our Perfect Blow Dry Makeover Spray, even without the heat. Mist all over the hair and in roots before braiding. Or you could try using Beyond the Beach Texture Spray which will add texture for a marvellously messy look. It has pro-vitamin B5 which helps your hair feel cared for and conditioned.

During this time you can make the most of the glorious minutes you have saved yourself. Feel free to online shop, plan a dinner party, google people or meditate! Whatever feels good. When hair is dry, shake the braids out and tousle for a wonderfully relaxed undone look.

Va Va Voom Volume and Curls

Want volume and curls in all the right places? There is a way to enhance volume without heat. After priming the hair, try applying a hair oil for your hair type. Try Smoothed, Sealed & Sensational No Oil Oil for Thick hair. It’s an excellent product for natural curls without heat. For naturally curly hair, this will help create definition. Apply the oil then twist and turn small sections of towel-dried hair into ringlets with your fingers. Then let the hair dry while you take a chillax.

If your hair is lacking volume, try Smoothed, Sealed & Sensational Volumising No Oil Oil for Fine Hair. This ultralight formula will create volume without weighing the hair down. Leaving you with amazingly glossy, shiny, weightless hair. You’ll have extra bounce all day long.

Paul says:

“When it comes to getting ‘big hair’ you don’t want to use any heavy products, as that makes volume harder to achieve. Apply Smoothed, Sealed & Sensational Volumising No Oil Oil to freshly washed, towel-dried hair to give your hair long lasting volume as well as lots of shine.”

So you really can ditch the heat and still have perfectly styled strands all summer long. Think of all the things you can do with the spare blow dry time. Win-win!
