Salon tips for the changing seasons

New season, new hair.

As the crisp chilly mornings and Pumpkin Spice Lattes begin easing you into the cooler months, there’s no better time than right now to revamp your look and transition tresses into the new season. Not sure where to start? Don’t fret. To help you achieve Insta-worthy autumn hair, we’ve rounded up six of the best tips including salon tips from our very own Paul Percival and Adam Reed.

1. Cleanse and nourish hair

Think of your new autumn hairstyle as wiping the slate clean from summer wear and tear and unwanted tones, along with other hair ‘mares that arise with heat and humidity. It’s essential to deep cleanse the scalp and refresh your hair as you move into autumn. This can help remove that dull, heavy feeling that covers up your lustre and colour and dehydrates the hair. Adam says:

“In our Percy & Reed salons, we always shampoo hair twice. The first shampoo is like pressing the reset button on your hair: it removes daily dirt build-up and any styling product residue. It’s the second round that delivers the shampoo’s caring benefits to your hair.”

2. Trim it

Trust us, when you’re constantly repeating to yourself “I just can’t take this anymore” every time you helplessly try to style your hair in the 10 minutes you’ve given yourself before work, it really is time for a trim. After all, there’s nothing like dry wispy ends and niggling knots weighing you down on a foggy autumnal morning. Bite the bullet and book yourself in.

Getting your hair cut will get rid of your split ends and help prevent hair cuticles from breaking, leading to healthier, happier hair. It will also make styling easier and give you a thicker, fuller look. Go on, you can’t say no to a special salon finish and added va va volume this time of year.

3. Deep condition

Does your hair look brassy? Frizzy? Dry? The change in temperature from summer to autumn can change the look and feel of hair. We recommend incorporating an ultra-nourishing hair mask into your hair routine at least once a week to give hair a great moisture boost. It will also help you achieve that A-lister, glossy finish and help protect from the damage of the cooler months. Adam says:

“Team a good quality shampoo and conditioner, such as the Percy & Reed Splendidly Silky Moisturising Shampoo and Conditioner with a treatment product for your hair type, and make sure you use the treatment regularly. We recommend using a treatment weekly, or more often if needed, to prevent damage being done in the first place. We created Wonder Overnight Recovery for exactly this reason – it fits seamlessly into your regular beauty routine, nourishing and rehydrating your hair while you sleep.”

4. Keep your scalp moisturised

Your scalp deserves some love and attention too, you know. The colder weather can zap moisture from the scalp so it’s important to keep it as soft, healthy and moisturised as possible from autumn through to winter. Try our Splendidly Silky Moisturising Shampoo and Conditioner. The gel formula cleans with care, softening and smoothing your hair, while vitamin E and intense rehydrators help to replenish vital moisture, combat frizz and boost shine.

This formulation is also the perfect pick-me-up for parched hair and a great companion for girls with curls.

What’s more, our Splendidly Silky Moisturising Conditioner contains moisturising ingredients including shea butter, vitamin E and aloe vera gel which help soothe the scalp while hydrating and deeply nourishing the hair. Meadowfoam seed oil promotes healthy hair follicles and rebuilds damaged areas of the hair, leaving hair smoother and more radiant, while wheat protein helps to protect, repair and enhance gloss. Wonderful!

5. Transition hair colour and styles

As we said earlier, there’s no better time than right now to revamp your style and adapt your summer beach girl look. Think warm tones and hues and golden autumn leaves or a pop of bold colour such as rich red. As for the key cut of autumn 2017, Adam says it’s all about short hair:

“The Boy Bob is the key cut of the season. The key to this look is a really nice, strong sharp line with a slight shattered interior and a really soft kinked texture.”

5. Use hair oils (daily)

Along with its beautiful autumnal tones and multicoloured leaves, the new season can bring with it something a little more uninviting. Damp, drizzly fogging mornings that wreak havoc with your hair. Adding a nourishing hair oil into your routine can help revitalise tired strands while making hair soft, silky and free from flyaways.

Adam says:

“Oils such as our Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Treatment Oil+, are also an essential part of your haircare regime to add shine and gloss to your hair.”
