How to Keep Your Hair Volumised All Day Long

Oh, how we love the feeling of stepping out in the morning when the sun’s shining, the wind is non-existent, and our hair looks jaw-droppingly fabulous. It’s easy to have a spring in your step when there’s bounce in your hair – but when that carefully crafted volume fades it can leave you feeling, well, deflated.

We believe that happy hair means happy you. And that’s what we care about most. In this post, we’ll take you through our step-by-step guide to wow-factor volume that lasts.

Volumising hair care range by Percy and Reed

Step 1: Volume starts in the shower

If you’re a Percy & Reed fan you’ll know our mantra is “great hair starts in the shower” – and that includes great volume. To get the light, bouncy look you’re after your hair must be clean. And we mean really clean, with no excess oils or product residue. Our Percy & Reed Bountifully Bouncy Volumising Shampoo and Conditioner don’t contain any waxes or oils that cause heaviness, making them ideal for volume-boosting.

We hear from our salon customers that a lot of people with fine hair skip conditioner altogether, because they don’t want anything to weigh their hair down – but even the finest hair needs regular TLC! The trick is finding the right conditioner. We recommend choosing a formula that’s specifically developed for fine hair, with a lightweight texture that conditions the hair then rinses away completely.

Step 2: Mousse, mousse, baby

Do you use a mousse to help style your hair? If you want serious volume, this is the secret. Modern mousse formulas – like our Abundantly Bouncy Volumising Mousse – give BIG volume whilst leaving the hair soft and natural looking.

After towel-drying your hair, apply a golf ball-sized amount of mousse, pull it all the way through using your fingers, then comb through from root to tip before you blow-dry and style.

Step 3: Big up your blow dry

Now’s the fun bit: blow dry time! This is when you really get to big your hair up and build volume. The best way to blow-dry your hair for serious volume is by lifting your hair at the root as you dry each section.

Adam’s tip for this is drying hair with your head upside down (you know, if you fancy practising your yoga at the same time) while continually moving your hair around. Do this until it’s 80-90% dry. Then, take sections of the hair and smooth it out with a round brush and hairdryer just like the pros.

Step 4: Hold up!

To achieve volume in especially fine hair, you’ll need to use a quality hairspray post blow-dry to hold up your style. Here at Percy & Reed we don’t believe in ‘fixing’ hair in place – we love a good swoosh – which is why all our styling and finishing products give totally invisible, but reliable, support.

If you want to avoid the dreaded helmet-head look, using Percy & Reed’s Reassuringly Firm Session Hold Hairspray will ensure your hair looks utterly natural and is impeccably well-behaved all day long.

For a loose, natural look, spray your hairspray onto a dressing brush and sweep it through your hair. For a firmer hold, style your hair first and spray your hairspray all over when you’ve achieved the look you want.

Step 5: Keep a top-up handy

If your hair starts to feel a little flat towards the end of the day, our Dry Instant Volumising Spray will be your lifesaver. We promise. For an instant style refresh on-the-go or in a rush, spray it on and massage it into the roots for an immediate lift.

Oh, and here’s our salon secret… the more you massage your hair upwards whilst spraying, the more volume you’ll create. The question is, how big do you dare to go?
